Volunteer Braille Services (VBS) exists to provide braille related services and products for sight impaired individuals. Some of those services include braille transcription and transcriber training. We also have a library with over 1500 braille titles which includes both bound volume books (chapter books) and print/braille books for younger readers. We provide braille materials for individuals, school districts, non-profit organizations, restaurants and more.
BOOKS FOR PURCHASE
We maintain Very Bumpy Stories, a print/braille and bound volume library for the visually impaired. The catalog for the library lists over 1500 titles.
VBS LIBRARY MEMBERSHIPS
Membership to the library is open to all individuals, school districts and organizations within the U.S. Annual membership is $10 for individuals and $25 for schools and organizations. Books can be ordered online, by email or by phone. They are shipped via US mail in FREE matter library boxes. The boxes are used to return the books to us when they are due. 4-
Training is offered to sighted persons wishing to become Certified Braille Transcribers. Classes are held annually and run for about 6 months. We meet one evening a week for 2-1/2 hours. The class is tuition free, and all materials are provided.
Considerable time must be spent outside of class doing homework and studying the lessons. Certification is earned through the Library of Congress upon submission and approval of a trial manuscript.
We expect a reimbursement for this training in the form of volunteer transcription of assignments through our office or through the Communication Center at State Services for the Blind.
