OUR SERVICES

Transforming lives by helping those who are blind or visually impaired reach their full potential.

Volunteer Braille Services (VBS) exists to provide braille related services and products for sight impaired individuals.  Some of those services include braille transcription and transcriber training.  We also have a library with over 1500 braille titles which includes both bound volume books (chapter books) and print/braille books for younger readers. We provide braille materials for individuals, school districts, non-profit organizations, restaurants and more.

Braille Transcription

VBS Transcribers are volunteers certified by the Library of Congress. Materials transcribed include, but are not limited to: textbooks, manuals, leisure reading materials, cookbooks, knitting and crochet books, menus, personal and institutional requests. A Professional Format Advisor is on staff to assist our transcribers when necessary.

Transcriptions are produced according to the most current braille code. References used include:

• The Rules of Unified English Braille

• Braille Formats, Principles of Print to Braille Transcription

• The Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics and Science Notation

• Guidelines and Standards for Tactile Graphics

If required, material can also be produced using the English Braille, American Edition braille code.

Please contact us for more specific information on services and fees.

Transcriber Training

Training is offered to sighted persons wishing to become Certified Braille Transcribers. Classes are held annually and run for about 6 months. We meet one evening a week for 2-1/2 hours. The class is tuition free, and all materials are provided.

Considerable time must be spent outside of class doing homework and studying the lessons. Certification is earned through the Library of Congress upon submission and approval of a trial manuscript.

We expect a reimbursement for this training in the form of volunteer transcription of assignments through our office or through the Communication Center at State Services for the Blind.
